Popularity of USA-made Foods Continues to Soar

America was founded on the belief that all people are entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In a country so patriotic, it’s no surprise that people care where their pets’ food comes from—and they want it to be from the land they live on.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, "Made in USA" means that "all or virtually all" the product has been made in America. That is, all significant parts, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Products should not contain any — or only negligible — foreign content. For consumers, "Made in USA" represents high quality in terms of materials and manufacturing conditions. As the farm-to-table movement gains traction and health conscious consumers themselves are consuming fresher, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients, they expect the same for their furry family members.

After the widespread pet food recalls in 2007, pet parents began to pay more attention to what is in their pets’ food and the pet industry took notice. Cats and dogs all over the United States were sickened and killed from pet food containing melamine, an ingredient originated from China. Even though melamine is from China, it could have been included in "fillers" that are added to foods made in America. Reading labels and becoming familiar with the ingredient deck on a bag of food or treats is important for staying educated and aware of what pets are consuming.

Products made in the United States boosts the idea of safety for consumers, therefore encouraging them to potentially spend more money on a higher quality product. While a "Made in USA" label can ensure manufacturing in the United States, which can still mean the ingredients could be sourced from other countries. Keeping consumers educated on the difference between key words like "based", "developed", and "sourced" can help them navigate what products they want to purchase.
